When a loved one dies there is always
too much to do, too many decisions to make, the rush of time and the
fog of grief. Yet, family and friends will come and gather to
support, to spend some time walking with those who grieve. The people
of St. John’s are prepared to share their facilities, their talents,
and their pastors to help the people of our community through such difficult
days.
Our pastors will try to be with the grieving
family in their home or at the hospital if asked. They will meet
a second time with the family to plan the funeral worship service –
to discuss Bible readings, hymn selections, and requested special music.
This may be done before or after the visit to the funeral home.
Because we are a large congregation,
it is wise to check with the pastor or church office (634-7110)
before establishing the time of the funeral worship service or luncheon.
Sometimes another funeral has already been scheduled or some non-cancellable
event requires the sanctuary or fellowship hall.
The congregation will provide a pastor,
bereavement host/hostess, bulletin printing, soundboard technician,
ushers and custodial services. If requested, we will also locate an
organist/pianist and soloist.
If a luncheon is desired, the people
of St. John’s will provide and serve coffee, punch, and cakes
free of charge. There are also three more extensive meal options
available for which the family is asked to agree to pay the cost of
the food items involved. These options may be discussed with a
pastor, the church office, or the luncheon hostess for that month.
During the funeral worship service we
pause to hear and reflect on some of God’s gracious promises.
We place this precious, earthly life in the context of God’s neverending
love. At St. John’s a large Baptism cloth is used to cover the
casket or surround the urn to remind us that our loved one has been
dressed up in Jesus, and that he or she is certainly wearing their traveling
clothes as we now entrust them to the strong and faithful arms of God.
